“A former Houston Police Department narcotics officer has been charged with murder, nearly seven months after a botched drug raid left a couple dead and unleashed a sprawling police scandal.
Ex-case agent Gerald Goines on Friday was charged with two counts of felony murder in the Jan. 28 deaths of Dennis Tuttle and Rhogena Nicholas and is still under investigation over claims he stole guns, drugs and money, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced at a news conference downtown. His partner, Steven Bryant, was charged with one count of evidence tampering, a state jail felony.” By St. John Barned Smith and Keri Blakinger
“Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg this week voiced opposition to portions of a proposed settlement of a federal lawsuit involving the county’s misdemeanor bail system, prompting some fellow Democrats on the bench to question why Ogg is raising her concerns at the 11th hour.” By Gabrielle Banks
BAIL REFORM – How is it translating to defendants appearing in court on their scheduled court date? I sat through 11 misdemeanor docket calls over a 30-day period to find out how many defendants answer “here” when their name was called and how many did not answer at all. I heard a total of 655 names called. What percentage of people did NOT answer docket? (I did NOT count a defendant as absent if their appearance was waived, their lawyer was present and answered for them or the coordinator told the judge the defendant was in another court or on their way)
